Brief Introduction

The Australian Studies Centre of Beijing Foreign Studies University, established in 1983, is one of the earliest of its kind in China. The Centre hosted the First Conference on Australian Studies in China in 1988 and initiated the establishment of the Chinese Association for Australian Studies (CAAS). Professor Hu Wenzhong, the founding Director of the Centre, had been President of the CAAS since its founding until 2000. Currently Prof. Hu Wenzhong and Prof. Sun Youzhong are Honorary Presidents of the CAAS. Mr. Li Jianjun is Director of the Centre and Secretary-General of the CAAS.

In addition to offering courses on Australian history, society and culture at the undergraduate level, the Centre focuses on the development of postgraduate programs of Australian studies. All the Centre faculty members have studied or researched in Australian universities. Besides attending the exchange programs in Australian universities, the postgraduate students of the Centre have been winners of Australia-China Council Competitive Project Awards and have opportunities to do research in Australia.

The Centre edits Blue Book of Australia: Annual Report on Development of Australia and Chinese Journal of Australian Studies, both published by the Social Sciences Academic Press. The Centre also co-hosts the annual China-Australia Transcultural Studies Symposium with the University of Western Australia and the University of Adelaide. The Centre’s translation projects in progress include Li Yao’s selected translations of Australian literature (10 volumes), Colin Mackerras’s works on China, and David Williamson’s plays.
